Vacation Sans Guilt

Vacation Sans Guilt

by | Aug 8, 2017

Paying yourself before anything else, sends a powerful message that you are more important than any bill. It is empowering and it is a foundation for building a solid financial life.

grew up in Denver, Colorado and this summer I enjoyed a 6 day visit to my home city. It had been 5 years since I was there. I had a great time with family and friends. Going out to dinner, shopping and just being together enjoying long evenings in the cool mile high air was fantastic!

As I reflect on some of the memories made, I am reminded of the contrast from my visit in 2012. Like this trip, I really enjoyed spending time with people I do not see very often. The most dramatic difference is a financial one. In 2012, I was in a very different place than I am now. Unlike my experience then, as I documented my expenditures from this vacation, I had no sense of remorse or worry because my trip did not increase my debt. This was not the case in 2012. Like many people, I convinced myself that it was okay to add to my debt in order to visit loved ones. I do not remember the exact amount, but I added roughly $500 to my credit card debt, and at that time, I was unable to pay the card off every month. In all likelihood, I paid for my 2012 vacation for 2-3 years afterward.

My trip to Denver this year was no more important and I certainly felt just as happy to be with those I love. However, since becoming financially healthy, I was able to make more conscious decisions regarding this vacation. After a five year absence, I was ready to see family and friends again. I gave myself time to plan this trip and I started looking for a reasonably priced flight a couple of months in advance. My flight was purchased with money from a savings account. I created a budget for meals and entertainment while there and set money aside specifically for this. Although I did everything I wanted to do while in Denver, I actually spent less than the amount I budgeted. It is awesome to have “seed” money in my account to continue increasing for my next travel venture.

It is much easier to live a joyful, meaningful and satisfying life when you have the financial means to do so. Doing what you love, whether it’s trips to exotic destinations, peaceful escapes or spending time with those you love, is much more satisfying without the distraction of inadequate funds and financial strife.
